Srila Bhaktivinod Thakura, born Kedarnath Datta in 1838, is widely revered in ISKCON as the pioneer of the modern Gaudiya Vaishnava revival who rediscovered and reestablished Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s teachings at a time when they had nearly disappeared. Serving as a devoted magistrate, compassionate preacher, and prolific writer, he composed hundreds of devotional songs and books, revived congregational chanting, and discovered the sacred birthplace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Mayapur. His tireless efforts formed the foundation for ISKCON’s worldwide movement, and his legacy continues through his son, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur, and Srila Prabhupada—the founder-acharya of ISKCON—who was a direct disciple of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur and carried forward this mission to spread Krishna consciousness across the globe.
